How dare you spank my child!
Writers must be insane. We spend countless hours pouring our hearts out into our work, nurturing our characters, giving our story legs to stand on its own merit, and falling in love with what we have created. Then, we let out a loud sigh of relief as we step back from it. Like any good parent would, we want to show others the glory of this new and powerful force of nature, also known as our story…
And then those blood thirsty vampire editors get their claws in your baby. Violent red slashes scar the face of your once well-crafted pages. Cradled in your arms, your anger grows at those who have no foresight, no imagination, no understanding of what you had created.
Hmmm…I might be a little dramatic, but I think most new writers feel like this on some level when their manuscript is returned from an editor. I…

You’re only as strong as your team
This guy knows what he is talking about! Great advice for anyone in a business.
I find that writers have a tendency to think of themselves and their career as individual endeavors. Oddly enough, I once thought this way as well. Reality couldn’t be further from the truth. It takes a team of people to be successful in any business, and writing is no exception.
I’ve owned and run several businesses and I understand the value to having a great team. Typically I need someone strong in operations, another in quality & regulations, another in finance, and often a legal counsel representative. This is just basic business. You can’t possibly know everything you need to about every aspect of your business, so surround yourself with others that can support the areas you aren’t top notch on.
If you’re a writer and not an artist, then don’t be creating the book cover for your next book. Have a resource that you trust to do this or…

My Character Matrix
One of the most helpful tools that I use when writing is my character matrix. Addicted to MS Excel spreadsheets, I found the logic of using this tool to ensure that I had characters that truly interacted with each other in a natural way.
To do this, I simply listed out the names of the primary characters across the top and then the same names along the left side. In each of the boxes of my matrix I list out how the person (or character) recorded in the top of that column feels about the person listed on the left of that row.
So, let’s say the grumpy old man, Sam, feels that the thin young boy, Tim, is unfit for combat duty. I type that in that specific cell of the matrix grid. Sam also feels there is no place in a war zone for females such as Maria…

What a month it has been!
Well, it’s been a heck of a month let me tell you! I went to the Des Moines Comic Con last month as a vendor and the very first day on my way there I get into an accident that totals my car. Yep, it’s toast. I’m o.k. shook up, but o.k. So my son who was at work was scared I was hurt more I was saying so took the rest of the day off to help me and keep a very close eye on me. Now I know how my kids feel when I eagle eye watched them after they were hurt. So then begins my trek to find another car for less than $2,000. Miracle of miracles I found one! I found a 89 Ford ranger and I love it! clean engine, drives good and shifts great! Yes, it’s a stick.
My friend broke her ankle and has been laid up for 2 weeks so far. She had pins and plates put in so yeah, she is gonna be off for a while longer too. She is so not used to this! But I’ve been going over to help her when I can and how I can with laundry, dog, cleaning and such.
My mom had a little tiny bit of a stroke the other week, scared the jeepers out of me. It only lasted about 10 minutes and then was gone. Stayed with her for a couple of hours but she was fine.
On the business side, I am now working on setting up a new and improved website for the Iowa Book Source page. It’s now on IowaBookResources.com because I realised when you abbreviate it to IBS, to me that is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So we changed it. Jan is helping me do it and she is doing an amazing job on the site! It looks so much better than it did before! I did screw up and add the books to the old new site by accident instead of the new new site. So I got to add all the books twice. But it’s done. I’m also going to be running another website that was started by someone else and I was told it was available if I wanted it. So I took over ebookBargainsToday.com
Working on getting it worked around and up and running. Trying to work out a few kinks like pricing and the tier as to what would go into each tier for the pricing and quantity of items to go with it. I want to attract sponsors too, but right now I can’t afford to pay to have another site sponsor ours, but I can do a trade with them, I can put a link with their banner or logo on my two pages that I am running in exchange for putting ours on theirs too. We shall see how it goes. If you have any suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments section below. I hope everyone has a wonderful evening. Blessings.
